I love your writing, Matt, both on film and on politics/culture. But in this piece your central thesis that what republicans truly crave is cruelty and authoritarianism reads as a somewhat shallow interpretation of their underlying philosophy, experiences, etc. Some do want that, of course, but I think most see it as a means to an end. I’m a lifelong diehard liberal, but talking to close conservative friends of mine reveals there is actually some depth there. I suspect Romney has the same depth, though those like Trump and Desantis are obvious grifters and opportunists.

The country needs conservatives as a balance to liberals the same way a car needs a break as a balance to the gas. I’ve found talking to smart, reasonable, principled conservatives led me to greater understanding and empathy, which is the only route toward true progress. Keep up the good work and writing!

Love that Prince of Egypt article. Recently bought the new 4K and it looks *amazing* but what really blew me away was the new sound mix which emphasized the music in a way that I hadn’t heard (or, more precisely, felt) before and made me tear up within the first few minutes. Still remains one of my personal favorites!
