First Five Candidates for June 2024
Who should the next First Five subject be? You choose!
A new month is here, so it’s time to select the next director for First Five coverage. This is an ongoing monthly series exclusive for paid subscribers where I write about the first five movies of acclaimed directors.
Denis Villeneuve has entered the fray! I figured he was a good selection since he’s a major Hollywood director now, but his first four movies show him as a rising star coming out of Quebec. I want to see the connective tissue between those movies and a director who has made some of the best sci-fi of the 21st century. You can also select other directors in the running: Jane Campion, Wong Kar-wai, Nicolas Roeg, and Agnès Varda. If a candidate goes five months without being selected, I’ll assume there’s insufficient interest and replace them with another filmmaker. Campion and Wong have two months left, and Roeg and Varda have three.
